Interview study: Development of complex Software-based Systems and the use of AI tools

  • Date: 19.12.2025
  • Complex software-based systems consist of a multitude of elements that interact in various ways. This includes cyber-physical systems like cars, which comprise numerous software and hardware components, as well as software products on which multiple development teams work on different software elements. Consistency problems represent a key challenge in the development of complex software-based systems.

This interview study investigates how developers experience and manage consistency problems in complex software-based systems. It focuses on the question of which psychological needs—such as the need for autonomy, competence, or relationships—shape their perceptions and actions during the development process. Simultaneously, it explores how these experiences might change in the context of increasingly AI-driven software development in the future. The study is being conducted jointly by the research groups of Prof. Gerling and Prof. Mädche and will take place in January 2026. Participants will receive €20 for their participation.
